Vice President J.D. Vance delivered remarks on Monday at the Lake Lucerne Summit in Switzerland, addressing the complex situation unfolding in the Middle East, with a special emphasis on solutions to mitigate violence in Lebanon.

“I would describe it as very good progress,” the vice president said, when asked about the situation in Lebanon. “…We want a regional ceasefire, right? We want Hezbollah to stop firing at our friends in Israel; we want Israelis to be able to live in peace. We also want to make sure that when things happen, they don’t spiral into broader escalation.”

Last week, Israel and Hezbollah agreed to renew a ceasefire, with reported help from the United States, Qatar, and Iran acting as intermediaries. The situation has remained volatile, as Israel reportedly continued to strike Lebanon even after the ceasefire began last Friday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly defied pressure from the United States and others to deescalate IDF operations in Lebanon, noting in a statement posted to X, “My directive, and that of the Minister of Defense, to the IDF is clear and has not changed: Our fighters in southern Lebanon have full freedom of action to thwart any direct or developing threat to them or to the residents of the North. The IDF has no restrictions on this matter.”

Vance said, “We’ve been, I think, very good at setting up what we’re calling a deconfliction mechanism,” the aim being to ensure that “when things happen, the sides are actually talking to one another.”

He also said that he believed it was possible to “get to a place where Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is protected, Israel’s security is protected – that’s going to require some coordination with the Lebanese armed forces, and also, it’s going to require the Iranians to rein in Hezbollah.”

Importantly, the vice president additionally announced that, over the weekend, the Iranians agreed to invite inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency back into the country. “That is a major milestone for the American people and the first step in permanently…ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran,” Vance stated.
