Graham Platner finally suspends his Senate campaign

By Easton Martin | July 10, 2026

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine, announced that he is officially withdrawing from the race. His decision follows intense pressure from local and national party leaders after a former girlfriend accused him of sexual assault.

Platner announced his exit in an 11-minute video posted to social media, where he continued to deny the allegations. He stated that his exit is not an admission of guilt, but rather a reflection of the reality that national and state political structures have withdrawn their support.

The fallout following the allegations against Platner came quickly. High-profile progressive allies, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, quickly rescinded their endorsements and called for him to step down. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and major political action committees also moved to block funding from the race if Platner remained on the ballot, effectively eliminating his campaign’s financial viability.

Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, won a decisive victory in the June primary, running as populist progressive against the party establishment. His exit leaves a sudden vacancy on the November ballot for a seat that Democrats view as essential to winning a Senate majority. The winner of the Democratic nomination will face long-serving Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Under Maine election law, Platner must officially file his withdrawal paperwork by July 13 to allow the party to replace him on the ballot. If he meets this deadline, the Maine Democratic Party will have until July 27 to choose a replacement candidate.

The Maine Democratic Party held an emergency meeting to sign off on a nominating convention, which will involve hundreds of delegates from across the state. Party leaders clarified that Platner will have no role in selecting his successor.
