The media’s new target for willful ignorance: The reflecting pool

Mainstream media reports have found a new target for their typical scrutiny of the president, focusing a wave of critical coverage on the appearance of algae in the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. The narrative pushed by liberal outlets suggests that the recent 14.2 million dollar project to upgrade the landmark is already failing, pointing to a green tint in the water just days after completion.

However, the rush to blame the administration ignores basic facts about the pool’s construction process. The current appearance of the water has nothing to do with the design choices or the new paint color, despite media claims that a darker blue lining is absorbing sunlight and accelerating plant growth.

The reality behind the green water is entirely structural. While the basin sat empty during the eight-week renovation period, residual algae grew inside the dormant water supply lines. When the pool was finally refilled, this organic material was naturally flushed out of the pipes and into the open water. It is a standard biological startup reaction for a large, stagnant body of water following a prolonged closure, not a flaw in the engineering.

The determination to spin a routine construction byproduct into a design failure highlights a persistent malice toward the president. Rather than reporting on the facts of the pipe infrastructure, outlets chose a narrative meant to disparage a major project aimed at preparing Washington for the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.

The National Park Service is already clearing the water using a combination of hydrogen peroxide treatments and newly installed ozone nano-bubbler filtration systems. The advanced technology is designed to break down the residual cells from the pipes, ensuring the long-term success of the restoration regardless of the media is claiming.
