Screwworm detected in Texas. Is this because of DOGE cuts?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the presence of New World screwworm in South Texas on Wednesday, marking the first time the flesh eating parasite has been detected on American soil in decades.

Officials found the larvae in the umbilical area of a three week old calf in Zavala County, located roughly 50 miles from the Mexican border. The Texas Animal Health Commission quickly established a 20 kilometer infested zone around the site, implementing strict quarantine rules and animal movement restrictions to prevent the pest from spreading to the state’s massive cattle industry.

The detection sparked immediate political chatter online, with people attempting to link the biosecurity breach to recent budget cuts proposed by the Department of Government Efficiency.

This political narrative is entirely inaccurate, however. The biological reality is that the screwworm has been steadily advancing northward from South America for several years. The migratory creep toward the United States continued entirely unabated during the Biden administration, long before current government restructuring efforts began.

The parasite reached the border due to long term wildlife migration patterns, and the sheer momentum of the insect’s expansion through Central America and Mexico since 2023. The arrival in Texas simply reflects the culmination of a multiyear biological progression rather than any sudden vulnerability caused by domestic policy changes.

In response to the growing threat over the last two years, state and federal agencies had already been preparing for this exact scenario. The United States previously closed its southern border to live animal imports from Mexico in May 2025 after a case was discovered in southern Mexico. Texas officials also opened a new sterile fly dispersal facility earlier this year to deploy the primary biological weapon used against the pest, which involves releasing sterile male flies to disrupt the reproductive cycle.

The New World screwworm is the larvae of a specific fly that lays eggs in the open wounds of warm blooded animals. Once hatched, the maggots burrow into the living flesh of the host, which can cause severe injury or death if left untreated.
