President Donald Trump commemorated the launch of the U.S. Treasury Department’s “Trump Accounts” over the Fourth of July weekend by ringing the bells for the stock market and Nasdaq on Monday morning from within the Oval Office.
The accounts, long-awaited, were federally seeded on Saturday with $1,000 for more than 500,000 American children, according to the president. Parents, grandparents, or friends (for example) can contribute annually to these accounts, and the investment will continue to grow. “The balance will continue to grow over time, with or without contributions,” the official website explained.
These investment accounts have also received generous contributions from Michael and Susan Dell (Dell Technologies) and Ray and Barbara Dalio (Bridgewater Associates), among others.
“With the ringing of the opening bell for the Stock Market, those accounts will now begin to grow right along with our booming economy,” President Trump said. “…Between individual contributions and the seed funds, $800 million in new capital will be invested in the stock market for America’s children this week.”
The president lauded the launch of the investment accounts as a “very special kind of a thing,” and a “miracle.”
“Nobody thought it was possible,” he remarked. “Think of it, children that are born without money… they can become very wealthy children at 18, and they can flip it over…into other vehicles at a certain age…They can have a lot of money, especially if the market continues.”
During his comments, Michael Dell said that he and his wife Susan didn’t want the “children who were born just before to be completely left out, so we are contributing $6.25 billion – $250 to 25 million eligible American children – born…between 2016 and 2024.”
According to the government website, “all children under 18 with a valid Social Security Number are eligible to establish a Trump Account.”
