President Trump blames two things for UK Prime Minister’s resignation

President Donald Trump argued that United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation – announced this week – could be traced to two major issues.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, confirming that a new leader will take his place by September.

“He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!),” said President Donald Trump on Truth Social, referencing the prime minister’s resignation.

“I wish him well!” the president added.

President Trump has been resoundingly critical of European allies’ illegal immigration crisis – a crisis that the United States also faced at home until the Trump administration cracked down on border security in 2025, following former President Joe Biden’s open border policies.

According to The Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, illegal immigration has spiked considerably in the UK between 2020 and 2024, with analysts estimating that anywhere between 700,000 and 1.2 million illegal entrants now reside in the UK.

On energy, the UK has faced an escalating crisis, exacerbated by the disrupted flow of oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz amid the war with Iran. According to OilPrice.com, skyrocketing power bills and energy prices are threatening thousands of manufacturing companies in the UK.

Starmer, in remarks addressing his intent to resign, said that “every decision I’ve taken has been about putting the country I love first.”

He said he would now focus on a much more important job, being the “best husband” to his wife, Victoria, and father to his two children.

It is largely expected that Andy Burnham, a member of the Labour Party for Makerfield, will win the next election and go on to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. According to The New York Times, Burnham formerly served as the mayor of Greater Manchester.

Starmer’s resignation marks the sixth resignation of a UK prime minister since 2019.
