President Donald Trump burst out of the gate on Friday with a fresh statement, accusing the Iranian regime of leaking dishonestly framed information about a potential peace deal to the media.
“The terms that Iran leaked out to the Fake News have NOTHING to do with the terms that were agreed to, in writing,” the president said.
This comes after an Iranian state media outlet, the IRNA, released details concerning a drafted ceasefire agreement.
In the alleged terms, the supposed draft included details like: Iran making no commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and the termination of the Iran nuclear deal being subject to discussions following the signing of an agreement, per The New York Times.
Another item of note was that, under this alleged draft agreement, “part of Iran’s frozen assets would be immediately released after signing, and the rest would be gradually released during negotiations,” the outlet reported, via the IRNA.
However, President Trump has said that these bullet points leaked to the Iranian media have been dishonestly framed.
“Very dishonorable people to deal with,” the president remarked in his statement. “With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith. AMAZING! Also, their totally rebuffed Drone attack last night against Indian Ships leaving the Hormuz Strait is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. They better get their act together, and FAST!”
The new threat comes just one day after President Trump announced that the Iran war was nearly concluded. He told reporters in the Oval Office that a deal had nearly been reached, “subject to the finalization of documents.”
The situation has been tenuous. Before announcing this pending deal, the president had threatened to seize Kharg Island – a key Iranian seaport in its oil export industry – and “assume total control” of its gas and oil markets.
The president has said that the United States is close to a deal with Iran at least 39 times since the onset of Operation Epic Fury on February 28. It’s impossible to know how close a deal really is, but Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany, citing a senior administration official, reported that it may be 75 percent complete.
Per her report, the terms of the agreement may include the destruction of Iran’s enriched uranium, a commitment from Iran not to procure a nuclear weapon, and meaningful inspection processes. Iran would allegedly also have to stop funding terrorist proxies globally and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
