President Donald Trump said on Monday that marine traffic was beginning to kick up in the Strait of Hormuz following his announcement of a peace deal with Iran and the subsequent lifting of the U.S. Naval blockade on the key shipping corridor.
“Ships are starting to move, many loaded up with Oil, out of the Strait of Hormuz,” the president wrote in a statement posted to Truth Social.
He added, “They are going along the Southern ‘Highway,’ which is totally safe, secure, and pristine. There are other areas of travel, also!!!”
On Sunday, President Trump announced that a preliminary deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran was “complete.” This comes after weeks of difficult negotiations and multiple violent incidents within the scope of a tenuous ceasefire.
“I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” the president said. “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”
He also alluded to signing the deal with Iran on Friday, although details have remained somewhat elusive.
Vice President J.D. Vance joined CBS Mornings this week to discuss the agreement, describing it as “two-fold.” He said it achieves two goals: ensuring Iran “never” has a nuclear weapon, while also reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
“…It…fundamentally extends a hand to Iran and says, ‘Look, if you guys are willing to honor your obligations, if you’re willing to allow real inspections of your nuclear program, then we will welcome you back into the world economy.’”
Marine traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, according to maritime data available on social media, seems to be moving, albeit unevenly. Between June 10 and June 14, according to @MarineTraffic on X, an estimated 29 verified vessels moved through the strait, carrying crude, chemicals, and general cargo. Movement appears to be slightly erratic, but could significantly increase once a concrete deal is publicly signed.
“With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!” President Trump noted on Sunday.
