Are Minneapolis protestors just “standing up for their neighbors”?

In a recent appearance on Fox & Friends, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey defended violent actions by protestors, describing them as “standing up for their neighbors.” The statement came amid ongoing incidents in which protestors have thrown rocks, damaged vehicles, and actively blocked federal immigration officers from performing their lawful duties.

Mayor Frey’s remarks are troubling on multiple levels. Violence and obstruction of federal agents are clear violations of both state and federal law. By framing such behavior as legitimate civic action, he risks undermining the rule of law and sends a message that certain groups can act with impunity when opposing federal authority. The role of local leadership is to maintain order, protect citizens, and ensure lawful processes are respected, not to condone illegal acts.

Moreover, the notion that violent interference constitutes “standing up for neighbors” conflates personal or political preferences with civic responsibility. Residents affected by property damage, intimidation, or disruption of public services have a legitimate expectation that city officials will prioritize safety and legal norms over partisan sympathies.
