Israel and Hezbollah agree to renew ceasefire

The violence in Lebanon could make or break peace negotiations with Iran.

Israel and Hezbollah have renewed a ceasefire as of June 19, amid mediation from the United States, Qatar, and Iran, according to reports.

According to Politico, Israel and the terrorist group agreed to the ceasefire following Israeli attacks in southern and eastern Lebanon last night, which led to at least 21 more deaths in the region, including IDF soldiers.

The development is key, as the United States signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran this week and has 60 days to negotiate the final terms of a potential long-term agreement. The MOU, made available this week, includes an Iranian-driven stipulation that Israel must terminate its hostilities in Lebanon for a long-term agreement to hold.

This has been a difficult sticking point in peace negotiation efforts, as Israel has remained committed to keeping the IDF in Lebanese territory, despite pressure from the United States to withdraw. This has reportedly caused tension and stalls in the negotiation process.

“…What the president has grown frustrated with is sometimes we seem to be right on the cusp of a major breakthrough in the agreement, and then all of a sudden there’s a major explosion that goes off in a civilian population center in Beirut and a lot of people who have nothing to do with Hezbollah lose their lives,” said Vice President J.D. Vance on Thursday.

He added, “That’s not acceptable. That’s the sort of thing that we’ve asked for closer coordination so that we ensure it doesn’t happen.”

According to several reports, Iran helped broker the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, along with President Trump and Qatar.

“We didn’t meet out of desperation, Iran did,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social early Friday morning. “They are FINISHED! We’ll play out the 60 days. They get no money, not ten cents!”
