President Donald Trump promised to deliver a spectacular celebration in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to celebrate the 250th Independence Day, and he delivered in the biggest way possible.
Despite heat and weather delays, the show went on over the weekend, and D.C. came alive late Saturday night with a brilliant 40-minute display of fireworks that reportedly expended around 850,000 shells.
“The Crowd at 7:05 in the evening was 422,000 people!” President Trump wrote in a statement following the event.
He continued, “All were forced to leave because of the weather, the event was cancelled, and everyone was gone because of lightning. When I heard that it was cancelled, I immediately overturned that decision, and waited a while for people to come back. Incredibly, at least 150,000 people returned, and it was an even more spectacular evening than it would have been as normalized! It showed work under pressure.”
The president – who attended the event with First Lady Melania Trump and other members of his family – described the show as “the Most Spectacular Fireworks Show I have ever seen, and I’ve seen them all.”
“The world’s greatest fireworks show for the greatest country in the history of the world!” declared U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
According to Newsweek, the Guinness World Records association told the outlet that the fireworks show is being reviewed by “record experts.”
“At this stage, we are not able to confirm whether the record has been achieved,” they told the outlet in a statement. “We will only be able to do so once the evidence has been submitted and fully reviewed by our Records team.”
It’s unclear if the weather delays or problems from Saturday affected the total number of fireworks shells used in the show. Regardless, the fireworks display was one of the most massive in U.S. history and capped off several weeks of build-up to the nation’s 250th anniversary.
