How the removal of a mural perfectly exposes the backward priorities of some on the left

The city of Providence in Rhode Island is facing much deserved scrutiny after Mayor Brett Smiley successfully pressured a local business to remove a mural dedicated to Iryna Zarutska. The 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee was brutally murdered on a light rail train in Charlotte last year. The suspect in that unprovoked stabbing is a career criminal with a long history of violence. Despite the tragic nature of her death, Mayor Smiley labeled the memorial as “divisive” and “misguided” earlier this week.

The mural was located on the exterior of a downtown club called “The Dark Lady”. It was part of a national effort to humanize victims of violent crime. Elon Musk reportedly provided the funding for the project through a nonprofit organization. The mayor claims the intent of the donors is isolating and does not represent the values of Providence, suggesting that the city should instead support local artists who bring the community together.

This decision has left many residents wondering what exactly the values of the city are supposed to be. It is difficult to understand how a tribute to a murdered refugee could be considered a threat to public unity. The artist responsible for the work stated that the project was never intended to be political. He wanted the mural to humanize a young woman who fled a war zone only to be killed in an American city.

The owners of the establishment initially defended the artwork on social media. They pointed out that any claims of illicit intentions were completely false. However, the business eventually succumbed to the pressure from city hall and the local activist community. They released a statement apologizing for the project and promised to remove the image as soon as possible.

The removal of the mural comes at a time when the city is grappling with its own debates over public safety and justice. The Mayor labeling a victim memorial as “divisive” sends a chilling message to the public. It suggests that the city is more concerned with the political optics of the donors than the life of the person depicted. There is no easy way to justify the removal of a tribute to a victim of a senseless tragedy.
