Is an EBT riot on the horizon?

By Easton Martin | October 28, 2025

Social media is ablaze with speculation over what could happen if SNAP and EBT benefits are not funded by the end of the month. For millions of low-income Americans, these programs are the difference between putting food on the table and going hungry, and as the government shutdown stretches on, anxiety is growing.

If the impasse continues, it could lead to widespread unrest. In previous shutdowns, the Department of Agriculture has been forced to rely on emergency funds to keep SNAP payments flowing, but those reserves may not last indefinitely.

According to recent estimates, more than 42 million Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and even a brief disruption could have ripple effects across communities and local economies.

Whether that scenario unfolds will depend largely on how quickly lawmakers resolve the standoff and whether Washington can reach an agreement to keep millions of Americans fed.
