The Boeing Company announced Wednesday that it will relocate the headquarters of its Defense, Space & Security (BDS) division back to St. Louis, Missouri. This move ends a nearly decade-long tenure in the Washington, D.C., area. The aerospace giant originally moved the division to Arlington, Virginia, in 2017 to be closer to the Pentagon and federal policymakers.
This relocation follows a shift in the political leadership of the Atlantic region. The announcement comes just weeks after Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger took office in Virginia. She succeeded Republican Glenn Youngkin., The timing has drawn attention to the change in leadership in the state the company is now partially exiting. It’s no secret that things in Virginia have taken a bit of an extreme turn regarding policy.
Missouri officials called the return a validation of the state’s industrial climate. Governor Mike Kehoe, a Republican, called the move a victory for the heartland. He noted the 18,000-strong workforce already based in the region.
St. Louis serves as the manufacturing hub for several of the nation’s most critical defense platforms. These include the F-15EX Eagle II and the T-7A Red Hawk trainer.
