Chicago faces surge of violence over Labor Day weekend

Chicago reeled from a surge of violence over the Labor Day weekend as at least fifty four people were shot and seven were killed. The scale of the carnage shows the city’s deepening crisis and serves as a stark reminder that the situation is beyond normal capacity and clearly demands National Guard support. The deadly toll unfolded across several neighborhoods including Bronzeville and was reported in at least thirty two different shooting incidents.

Governor J.B. Pritzker has dismissed calls for federal Army deployment calling such action unwarranted, unconstitutional, and akin to an occupation. In his view, local resources are sufficient. But the magnitude of this weekend’s violence exposes the weakness of that position. The scale of destruction simply cannot be addressed solely through local responses.

Chicago has been the site of repeated tragic losses. The data show downward trends over months, but this weekend erases progress made. The National Guard would bring much needed reinforcements and stability. Pritzker obviously misjudged the threat level facing his state and the urgency of reinforcements.

For many residents, the weekend violence confirms what they have long feared. Chicago is in serious trouble and the time for decisive federal action has arrived.
