Another complication: U.S. fighter jet reportedly shot down over Iran?

It’s hard to say if the report is authentic, but if it proves to be true, this would further complicate a very difficult military operation for the United States

A U.S. fighter jet has reportedly been shot down over Iran, according to some sources, and if true, this further complicates an already-complex military campaign for the United States.

According to Axios, a U.S. fighter jet was possibly shot down by Iran. Shooting down American jets is a claim that is often made by Iranian media, so it is wise to be cautious about this report.

The outlet cited “two sources familiar with the incident” and noted that a search and rescue operation was allegedly unfolding in real time.

Iranian state media is reportedly offering a government reward for anyone who finds the crew members of the downed jet.

The New York Times also reported separately, citing U.S. and Israeli officials, that an aircraft had been shot down, and that whether the crew was still alive remained unclear. Iranian media has also claimed that aircraft in the region – purportedly American – have been searching for the downed American crew.

On Thursday, U.S. Central Command responded to a claim by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that an “enemy” jet had been shot down over Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. “All U.S. fighter aircraft are accounted for,” CENTCOM said. “Iran’s IRGC has made the same false claim at least half a dozen times.”

However, the reports circulating on Friday about a downed U.S. jet appear to be different than the situation CENTCOM was referring to earlier this week. They have not yet commented on the developing reports in U.S. media at this time.

If a U.S. fighter jet has indeed been shot down by Iran and American crew members are in danger of being taken hostage – or have already been taken hostage – this would obviously further heighten tensions between Iran and the U.S. and complicate ongoing airstrikes in the region.

On Friday morning, ABC News reported on the alleged downed jet. Ret. Marine Corps Colonel Steve Ganyard told the outlet that if a search-and-rescue operation were underway, the crew would have been trained on what to do in such a scenario.

“Well trained, well equipped, and now it’s a matter of the combat search and rescue forces…some of the videos that we’re seeing out of Iran show a C-130 and two Blackhawks,” he said, noting that this was a standard rescue formation.

He continued, “They’re designed to operate at low altitude, to go in and look for any downed air crew, to locate them, and to rescue them.”

As the situation developed on Friday, Iranian media claimed that its forces had allegedly struck a U.S. helicopter on a potential search and rescue mission. This has not been confirmed, and it is unclear if this occurred.

Again, the U.S. military has not confirmed any of these circulating reports, although the news is being echoed across nearly every outlet.

ABC57 reported that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNN, “President Trump has been briefed.”

This is a developing story.
