At a Democratic press conference pushing their housing bill, @SenatorWarnock called it legislation that “benefits people on both sides of the aisle.” Our reporter @alisonintheknow challenged him: “Senator Warnock, you just said the housing bill benefits both sides… but doesn’t the Save Act also do the same? 80% of Americans – Democrats and Republicans – want secure elections.” Warnock: “The Save Act is a voter suppression bill.” Alison: “How? All it does is require proof of citizenship and a photo ID.” Warnock: “Non-citizens are already prevented from voting… Show me all these illegal people.” Alison: “Just look at California. Homeless people are being paid to vote.” When pressed on the contradiction between “bipartisan” priorities and basic election security that most Americans support, Warnock had no real answer – just deflection. Common-sense voter ID and proof of citizenship shouldn’t be controversial. Why treat secure elections like a partisan attack? #confront
